With prices of silicon PV cells falling through the floor and inexpensive perovskite PV cells coming to the market the car industry has no excuse for not making solar roof tops a common part of any hybrid, plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV), or electric vehicle (EV), whether BEV or fuel cell. By preliminary estimates the solar roof-tops increase annual mileage for private cars by 10% and by about 15% for trucks without significantly increasing the cost of the vehicle. The contribution of solar car roof-tops to transport decarbonization, combined with exponential growth of the EV segment in the years to come, will have a major impact on real and perceived value of EV speeding up adoption of electric vehicles both for private and public transportation as well as for trucking industry. Actually the solar roof-top electric trucks and buses are poised to benefit more due to larger PV area and higher energy intensity and utilization rates.
